Helping Kids get a Head Start on the Game of Life
|
The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic has been playing a big role in introducing
the game of golf to hundreds of kids — and for many of them it will be a
lesson in life.
The Classic gave a $25,000 donation so that all five area Boys and
Girls Clubs could
institute the golf program. Besides instruction in playing the game, golf
provides the youngsters with many tools which they can use in their adult
lives, including perseverance, honesty and a code of ethics.
The program is under the direction of Bob Veroulis, an assistant
professional at Bermuda Dunes Country Club. Each club has about 40 kids
per class and more than 400 children have enrolled in the golf program
since it began last summer. About 35
percent of the budding golfers are girls and most of the students come from
homes which otherwise would not be able to afford golf instruction.
The Classic is proud to assist the Boys and Girls Clubs in starting this program, which builds character in many of these young people.
The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic has supported the Boys and Girls Clubs
throughout the Coachella Valley since 1961 and has contributed over $1.5 million to the various clubs.
